Capital Pubcheck Update 151 / EX-ALLIED PUBS ACQUIRED BY BASS

The aim of 'Capital Pubcheck' is to share information about the latest happenings on the London pub scene including new pub and bar openings, name changes, acquisitions, closures, notable changes to beer ranges etc. Cross references to CAMRA's various pub guides covering Greater London are also provided to enable easy updating. Information is gathered from a variety of sources including London Drinker readers, individual CAMRA members and branch contacts, breweries, pub operators, landlords etc.

This month we welcome three new Fullers outlets, one a splendid 'Ale and Pie'conversion in EC1 Smithfield, the others cocktail bars in EC2 City and SW12 Balham, a new Hogshead in Hornchurch and three 'All Bar Ones' in EC2 City, W5 Ealing and Twickenham. We catch up with a number of predominantly Irish pubs opened in former shop units in north west and west London but sadly largely bereft of real ale. We also include details of former Allied pubs believed to have been acquired by Bass, including many of London's most historic pubs and several former Firkin brewpubs.

The numbers in brackets after each entry refer to the page number in the following guides: E - East London & City Beer Guide, 3rd edition; K -Guide to Kent Pubs, 10th edition; 8K - Real Ale Guide to Kent Pubs, 8th edition; N - North London Beer Guide, 3rd edition; SE - South East London Pub Guide, 4th edition; 3SE - South East London Pub Guide, 3rd edition; SW - South West London Pub Guide, 2nd edition; W - Real Beer in West London; X - Essex Beer Guide, 9th edition.

NEW & REOPENED PUBS & PUBS CONVERTED TO REAL ALE

CENTRAL

EC1, BUTCHER'S HOOK & CLEAVER, 61-63 West Smithfield. Fuller: Chiswick Bitter, London Pride, ESB, seasonal beer. Splendid conversion by Fullers of former bank for its 'Ale and Pie House chain, opened early November. Originally two buildings, each bar retains its distinctive frontage; one stone clad in classic bank style, the other with wooden framed large windows. The interior is equally impressive with a delicate brass chandelier over the bar and wall paintings of past scenes of the nearby Smithfield meat market behind marble pillars. A decorative wrought iron spiral staircase rises to a mezzanine drinking and eating area, with table service at lunchtimes, available for private functions in the evenings. Beyond, lies a more intimate wood panelled area with alcove seating in traditional style. Food available until 9pm. Disabled WC. Open 7.30am for breakfast until 1 1pm Mon-Fri only. Fullers are to be congratulated for a fitting conversion in an historic area.

EC2, ALL BAR ONE, 127 Finsbury Pavement. Draught Bass; Fuller: London Pride. Latest outlet for the fast expanding Bass owned chain, opened mid-November on ground floor corner of new office block. It occupies the site of the former LONDON GENERAL Bass pub demolished to make way for the development. The usual ingredients of pine flooring and furniture with the addition of sofas near the large windows, with predominantly cream decor. Mirrors, ceiling fans, exposed ventilation, a prominent clock and blackboard menu complete the image. It reflects the current trend towards the 'middle ground' for the previously distinctive `brands' of the key pub groups. Food, disabled WC. Open 11-11 Mon-Fri, closed weekends.

EC2, ONE OF 2, 45 Old Broad St. Fuller: London Pride. New Fullers pub on three levels, opened June 1999, in complete contrast to `Butchers' above. Covered steps lead up past a small outdoor drinking area to a first floor level bar in the 'pine and steel' style. Low level lighting under bar counter, tiled flooring, cream decor, pine furnishings and metal framed artwork and mirrors etc. Stairs rise to upper level seating/eating area with optional table service, looking down on bar. A third floor offers a private function room. Loud music in evenings. Emphasis on cocktails, wine and food, with metallic menu. Open 11-11 Mon-Fri, closed weekends.

EC3, FENCHURCH COLONY, 14 New London St. No real ale. Free House. First floor bar and brasserie.

W1 (Mar), TURNERS ARMS, 26 Crawford St. Young: Bitter, Special. Reopened as a Liberty Inns Free House, ex-Shepherd Neame. EX-ALLIED PUBS ACQUIRED BY BASS

Since the takeover of Allied Domecq's pub estate by Punch Taverns backed by Bass, the latter has cherry picked the estate and the following Greater London pubs are now believed to be owned by Bass. The whole deal is still subject to Office of Fair Trading investigation. In the following list, the last known branding is noted. The list includes many historic Nicholson pubs and several Firkins including former brewpubs. Brewing equipment is believed to be awaiting removal to Burton upon Trent. * indicates pubs last reported as without real ale.
