LONDON BEER GUIDES UPDATE 99 (February 1995 edition)
A bumper period for new pub openings with a total of 17 recorded including four Wetherspoon Free Houses in the City, SE20 Penge, Orpington and Uxbridge; a Fullers "Ale & Pie" House in W1 Tottenham Court Road; five Davy's establishments selling real ale not previously reported; the third London Yates's Wine Lodge in Croydon; a Tap & Spile airside at Heathrow and a bar specialising in Belgian beers in Bromley. We have obtained information on London pubs now owned by various pub groups and details are included below. The much loved Express in Brentford has reopened.

Large spacious corner Wetherspoon Free House opened in December 1994 and created in ground floor of office/workshop building. Figures of the Hamlet (Hamlet's father, the King of Denmark) and Ophelia from Hamlet passing through pillars near the entrance reflect the thespian and ghostly theme. The building stands on part of the site of Bunhill Cemetery in which notable actors and entertainers were buried. Local history panels provide the details. Raised no smoking/eating area at rear. W1(F), JACK HORNER, 236 Tottenham Court Road. Fuller: Chiswick Bitter, London Pride, ESB, Mr Harry (winter). Latest Fullers 'Ale & Pie House' in former Barclays Bank premises. Furnished in traditional style with wood panelled walls adorned with miscellaneous pictures, polished floorboards, smoked glass partitions, tiled bar area and chandelier. The frontage and entrance attempts to recreate the cinematic style and a 'Wizard of Oz' theme has been created within. A figure of Dorothy flies overhead near the entrance, above a sculpture of her Lion companion. Paintings of the Tin Man and Straw Man feature in an alcove. Usual Wetherspoon decor with false fireplaces and local history panels. No smoking/eating area at rear opens out on to small brick patio. Food. Disabled toilet. Open all permitted hours.
BROMLEY, ABBAYE, Queens Gardens. Free House. No real (British) ale. A Belgian Brasserie-Bar under shopping mall. Sells four Belgian keg beers on tap including Hoegaarden Wit, Bellevue Kriek and Leffe Blonde plus a range of bottled beers including bottle conditioned Trappists, Duvel, Witkap Triple etc. Separate bar and restaurant areas.

CROYDON, YATES'S WINE LODGE, 3-11 High Street. Boddington: Bitter. Courage: Directors Bitter. John Smith: Bitter. New Yates's Free House (the third in London) in typical decorative style in former bank premises. Multi coloured ceilings, bright lights, wine casks and tiled bar area all feature. New Wetherspoon Free House opened in December 1994 in former shop premises. The name reputedly refers to the benefit to harvesters from British Summer Time whose inventor was a local resident. A sculpture of a lady bearing harvest products stands near the entrance. Usual formula with alcoves, no smoking/eating area at rear and .... dusty books. Local history panels and photos of old Orpington adorn the wood panelled walls. Food. Open all permitted hours.

A welcome reopening for this long standing real ale Free House. The landlady gave birth upstairs unexpectedly on the opening night thus providing national publicity. (W97, U92)
HEATHROW AIRPORT, TAP & SPILE, Terminal 1 (Airside). Free House. Adnams: Bitter, Ruddle: County. Tetley: Bitter. Wadworth: 6X. Guest beers including the Marstons "Brewers Choice" range. New bar in departure lounge and open only to air ticket holders. At balcony level and approached by spiral staircase. Snacks and hot food available. Open from 6am until last flight departs between llpm and midnight every day.
UXBRIDGE, GOOD YARN, 132 High Street. Courage: Directors Bitter. Theakston: Best Bitter, XB. Wadworth: 6X. Younger: Scotch Bitter, guest beer. Another Wetherspoon Free House opened in December 1994 in former menswear shop premises whose antecedents supplied tailored goods to Queen Victoria. A long narrowish dark wood panelled bar extends into a raised no smoking/eating area at the rear. Local history panels, coloured glass ceiling light, mirrors, fake fireplaces and more dusty books complete the picture. Food. Open all permitted hours.
